one for the parents....one for the kids.....

I have been having a play with coconut butter/oil in different recipes lately.....I say butter/oil as I don't really know what it is as I have heard it being called both.....it's cold here and so it is solid and looks like butter....however it melts like an oil and in summer time looks like oil....either way it's so very scrumptious and good for you.....(and it makes your house smell AMAZING!)
This is some info on it for those that have never used it before...this info is taken directly from the Loving Earth website. This is the brand that I use (NO I am not being paid to say this!) .....for more info check out www.lovingearth.net

What is it?

The reason we call our coconut oil "Coconut Butter" is because its texture is creamier and more buttery than other coconut oils. Why? Because we use wet method centrifuge extraction, cold-pressing the oil from fresh coconuts with 1 hour of breaking the seal on the coconut shell. It is raw, light tasting and smooth - unlike any coconut oil you've ever experienced.  Our current batch of coconut butter is sourced from Thailand and is processed in exactly the same way as shown in the photos on our gallery of the Mexican operation that we source oil from when it is available.

Its health benefits include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. Click on Health Benefits to the left to find out more.

These cookies turned out first time.....and very quickly I had to make them again.....they were a nice little treat for me....I hope you love them also! I have called them 'parents cookies' as I figured we are always making cookies for our kids.....and as much as I know mine will devour them for afternoon tea (whats left of them!) I thought these could be hidden and the lid undone when you sit done of an evening with your cuppa once the kids are in bed!

parents cookies

1 ½ cups almond meal
2 tblspns coconut butter/oil – (my measurement was 2 tblspns solid and then I melted it to liquid)
2 tblspns rice milk
½ cup dairy free choc drops – I use the brand “Sweet William”
2 tblspns rapadura (can swap this for brown sugar)
1 tspn cacao (can swap this for cocoa)
1 tspn cinnamon

Preheat oven to 180c and line a large tray with baking paper.

In a large bowl place the almond meal, coconut oil and rice milk. Mix well.

Add the remaining ingredients and combine well, slightly kneading it in the bowl to make sure it’s all sticking together (I used my hands).

WARNING: AT THIS STAGE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY THE COOKIE MIX AS IT WILL NOT MAKE ITS WAY INTO THE OVEN.....ALREADY IT’S SO YUMMY!!!!! HA HA HA....I KNOW YOUR GOING TO NOW!!!!!!

Make round balls (teaspoon size) and place on tray. Slightly flatten with a fork. (Mine did not spread so they don’t have to be too far apart).

Bake in preheated oven to 7-8 minutes.

Allow to cool on a wire rack.

Makes 18 cookies.

NOTE: If there are any cookies left (after you ate some uncooked and then one hot out the oven....and then 2 once they were cool....oh hang on, that was ME that did that!) you can then try this addition.....

ICING
2 tblspns icing sugar
½ tspn cacao (once again this can be cocoa)
1 tspn rice milk

Mix all ingredients well.

Place a small amount one cooled cookie and place another cookie on top! Not only do they remind me of the look of “Kingston” biscuits, I get the taste too.....

Now....here is a fun "treat" for the kids......

honeycomb
1 cup caster sugar
4 tblspns golden syrup
1 tbspn water
3 tspns bicarb soda
Line a large flat tray with baking paper.
In a large saucepan place the sugar, golden syrup and water. Stir constantly over a medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves (this will take a few minutes).

Bring mixture to the boil, stop stirring and boil for 4-5 minutes until dark and golden (be careful to not burn it!)

Remove from the heat and working quickly add the bicarb soda and stir well (mixture will look like a science experiment that it about to explode!)

QUICKLY pour honeycomb onto prepared tray and allow to cool at room temperature.

Once cooled, break into pieces and enjoy!

I haven’t tried it but next time I am going to try dipping them in chocolate or even drizzling some over the top....sounds good!
I look forward to hearing from you once you have made them!

Coming soon....what my kids take in their school lunch boxes.....don't forget to submit your details to automatically get my blog updates (top right hand corner if the main blog page).....Wishing you HEALTH and HAPPINESS!!!!!!

"Super Mum" .... Vanessa Nixon

Good Morning and HAPPY MONDAY!!!!!! I have been blessed to have met this weeks "Super Mum" through my business "Cut out the Crap" as we share a love of healthy and tasty food! This Mum of 2 has had an interesting journey of ups and downs which has led her to become so passionate about everything she does.....I am thoroughly loving talking to these "Super Mums"...... I love how every one has a story share...... I truly hope you are enjoying them also!

“Vanessa Nixon”

·         Tell us a little bit about you and your family?

I was born and raised in Lismore, New South Wales, after leaving school moved to Brisbane and the Gold Coast and then onto London for almost 3 years and was lucky enough to travel extensively – I met my husband Mark in Africa and here we are 13 years later!

I am a mum of two gorgeous children, lucky enough to have a pigeon pair, Charlize is 7 and Bryce is 5.

Both of my kids have multiple food allergies and my husband has suffered from Depression which has sent my life on a journey of discovery about nutrition and looking for answers about why this is happening. Through my experiences I am so passionate about making a change to the lives of others through better nutrition, because I have seen the results in my own family.

I did however return from Africa with Dengue fever which left me with some residual liver issues. In 2009, I was diagnosed with two tumours in my liver and was totally shocked, I had just embarked on a life changing journey to better nutrition losing 35 kilos and was ready to take on the world, then I got very sick. As a mum of a 18 month old and a 4 year old I was not about to take that news lightly so I decided to change everything in my house. I removed every chemical and all preservatives from the home, plus went on a major liver detox and shocked my doctors when two months later I returned for a follow up CT Scan to be told the tumours were totally gone!

Charlize had a pretty major reaction to eggs at a young age and not being around any allergies before it was pretty scary and was life changing, I also remember the day she had her first blue lolly at 18 months, she was literally climbing the walls and threw glass plates out of a cupboard. Being a beautiful placid little girl I knew something was amiss and this started us looking into the affects of food colours. She is a gorgeous girl and is too smart for her own good some days!!!! Her brain never stops and she blows me away with some of her questions. My son also got very sick at the age of six months which took a year to diagnose him, he had ghiardia which is a parasite in the gut – by the time it was diagnosed it had eaten into his stomach lining and he was very ill – as a result he has major issues with food which is improving dramatically – YAY! (thanks to Superfoods for Kidz). My son also has many behavioural issues we have had to deal with including many Aspergers traits which can make life fun, but it just makes me want to cry the change in him and how far he has come, I’m so proud of him and it is amazing to see the difference good nutrition makes to his life and that of our family as a result.

Both of my children suffer from different allergies – which makes life interesting when it comes to cooking a meal but I have adapted and just means I pretty much have to make everything from scratch which is not a bad thing! The allergies we deal with on a daily basis are wheat, cows milk, soy, corn, cola nut – (this is used in flavours but never displayed as an ingredient), almonds, cashews, yeast, garlic, peas, lemon, coffee, and egg whites and kidney beans..... phew..... sounds a lot when it is all written down!!!!

I am lucky enough to have been raised by amazing parents, who have taught me so much about being positive and getting on with things when you are presented with a challenge. I also have two beautiful sisters and we are all very different but are still very close and I am so blessed to have them. My mum is an incredible cook so we were always in the kitchen from an early age, so I have always loved cooking, something I am eternally grateful for this has allowed me to be able to get my head around making lots of alterations and being creative in my cooking when working around the families allergies. At the moment I am also trying to cut out sugars, so that has been another thing to work on trying to once again change the ingredients in recipes and getting the mix right.

"The Family"
·         What one ingredient can you not live without and why?

Wow, how do I answer this one there is so many! I am a bit naughty and would love to mention Chia seeds but I would have to say Cacao. I make sure that our family have Cacao in our diet somewhere everyday it makes an enormous difference to Bryce – his attention, attitude and behaviour improves dramatically when he has Cacao daily. It also helps Charlize in her clarity and to concentrate at school and I find it gives me my chocolate fix for the day but also boosts my nutrition as well. We all need the antioxidants from Cacao to fight the chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis but the boost in Iron and Magnesium is also great for our bodies. The kids usually have Berry Choc Chunk in the mornings (from Superfoods for Kidz) so they get their fix for the day, or a Super Food Bar.

·         If you had half an hour to cook dinner and realized you didn’t have anything planned, what would you cook?

My famous Chickpea veggie patties, these are a mix of whatever veggies I have in the fridge or cupboard, any cold meat leftovers I may or may not have – all blitzed up in my Thermomix (yes this is something I absolutely CANNOT live without) plus a tin of chickpeas, some of Superfoods for Kidz Vital Veggie Power and some Chia seeds – usually I serve it with some greens and avocado – or sometimes noodles for the kids and a Tahini garlic sauce (for Charlize, Mark and I). The Veggie patties are more than enough for our little fussy eater!

·         What is once piece of advice you can pass on to other busy mums?

You cannot do it all! OK I admit this is something I am very guilty of doing myself, but I have had to take a step back lately and realise it is ok to say NO sometimes. I’ve even adopted an “I’ll call you back policy” if I am not sure about something. In the past I’ve said yes to everyone and realise it is ok to say no sometimes, and it is OK to ask for help! This is something I have had to learn the hard way through my husband’s depression I have realised that I needed to talk to people and it was ok to ask for some help instead of trying to take everything on myself.

Life is so short and sometimes we can be so busy running around that we miss the little things, our kids are only little once and we need to cherish what we can, it’s important to take some time out as a family and enjoy!  I am still a work in progress and am sure there are quite a few steps I still need to take but I am getting there and enjoying the journey, I could not do it without the support of my family.

·         If you could have dinner with any 3 people in the world, who would it be and why?

Charlotte Gerson –  I consider Charlotte to be an absolute pioneer in her knowledge about curing diseases naturally, I would love nothing more than to have a chat with her about the Gerson Therapy and how we can educate more people about how it is possible to prevent and cure yourself of disease in a more natural and alternative way.

David Wolfe – David Wolfe is the Superfoods Guru, he knows anything and everything about Superfoods and would love to have a delicious meal with him discussing the many benefits of Superfoods, as well as some recipes to exchange and also more ways to implement Superfoods as a more mainstream foods, I would also love to discuss the effects of processed foods on the decline of health in today’s society.

The current Minister for Health in Australia is Tanya Plibersek.

WHY would I invite the current Australian minister for health to this dinner? Because I truly do want to see a change in the way that health is viewed and handled in Australia. We need to educate people from an early age on the benefits that good nutrition can make to health not only physical health, but mental health as well. Perhaps we might be able to look at implementing some further education to encourage investing in preventing illness is also important rather than only investing in searching for a cure.

This dinner would no doubt create some very heated discussions, but I truly believe these are the kinds of discussions that need to take place for us to move forward. Something needs to change and instead of focussing on the decline of health and rise in obesity and disease in Australia we need to find a way to focus on ways we can improve the health of Australians.

·         Your business “Nutra Organics” is ALL about SUPERFOODS....tell us more, how did this come about?

Nutra Organics is the brain child of Mark and Darlsy Powell, two amazing people who are totally passionate about nutrition their motto is ‘nutrition today for a healthy tomorrow’. We wanted to provide totally organic whole foods to the community that are easy to implement into your daily routine, especially given the busy lives we all lead; juggling so many roles each day.

Nutra Organics is an Australian family business, we all run it together. It is incredible to work with like minded people who truly want to make a difference to the lives of others. We began with our Adults range Nutra Organics.

Last year, we launched Superfoods for Kidz which firstly came about as a result of wanting to help Harmoni, Mark and Darlsy’s granddaughter who was diagnosed with Epilepsy. We realised that there was nothing specifically for children available so we started making up our own organic superfood formulations specifically for children and watched Harmoni improve dramatically, my children also improved out of sight. We then realised we needed to launch these products to help change the lives of other families too!

We  decided to add our Superfood Bars to the mix as we wanted something healthy and fun that the kids could take to school for a snack, that was allergen free and also could boost the kids nutrition at the same time, providing natural energy. The kids and all of us were happy taste testers and we came to find the perfect bar and in the process also discovered that the kids having the extra protein in the bars also improved their appetite. We decided to make the bars available to school tuckshops and as a healthy fundraising alternative as well. We were over the unhealthy fundraising foods coming home from kindy and school. We would just send the money back to school as we did not have those products in the home (I must say the bars are not just for kids I always have one on hand if I get stuck without food somewhere).

Superfoods are both a food and a potent organic healing tool; they have elements of both. Superfoods are a class of the most potent, super-concentrated and nutrient rich foods on the planet. Superfoods have more bang for your buck than your usual foods, they contain a dozen or more unique properties. For example a Goji Berry is a complete source of protein, immune-stimulating polysaaharides, liver cleansing betaine, antioxidants and 20 trace minerals and much more.

We have worked really hard to maintain the integrity of our products by not adding anything artificial at all. Our products are 100% whole foods and are processed in such a way to maintain the nutritional contents of the foods vitamins, minerals and enzymes, without damaging the cell walls of the foods. Making them Bioavailable which means ‘naturally occurring’, so your body can recognize them, break them down, and use them for maximum health benefits.

It’s been an amazing journey for us all, it has not been an easy road but we LOVE it and would not be anywhere else for quids, we have learnt so much and there is so far to go! We are lucky to all have each other, and our differing strengths complement each other. We have been so fortunate to have met so many amazing like-minded people who are sharing our passion for nutrition that we can team up with, including you Collette, (thanks to Tanya from additive free pantry for the introduction). We also are blessed with some incredible customers who are willing to share their journeys with us. Nutrition is something that so many people are uneducated about and with the rates of allergies, disease and behavioural disorders on the rise we truly need to take a look at how we can all make a difference not only to our lives but more importantly the lives of the current generation of children. We would love to be able to reach as many people as we can and truly make a difference to their lives.

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome....

Hello "Cut out the Crap" friends and family....

As I sit here in the Sun writing this blog I realize my biggest worry at the moment is that I am time poor. I am a Mum of 4 who is juggling being a great mum, wife and business woman and quite often it feels overwhelming. I stop for a moment and breathe and look at all the positives and blessings in my life....and right at this very moment I KNOW how blessed I am to have 4 healthy children not to mention the good health of me and my hubby. This letter I received that I am sharing with you all today touched my heart so very deeply and if being time poor is my biggest worry at the moment then I am going to count that as a blessing too.
I ask you to please share this, see if there is anything you can do, or anyone that you may know that can get this story heard.

Today and always I wish you great health and happiness.

Take Care of You,
Collette x

To whom it may concern,

The following letter was written by our 9 year old daughter with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Please read it, and if you don’t know about the condition take 5 minutes to do a google search. Maddison is now trying to raise awareness for her condition. It is a debilitating condition with little coverage in the media, if any. There is no cure, treatment is supportive at best. She has written to the minister of health asking him to help get it out there and she also written this letter to the world and asked that I email it and ask people to keep emailing it to help get awareness out there. It is a rare genetic condition that results in a collagen deficiency. As collagen is found right through the body and is like a” glue” having a deficiency causes huge problems. It therefore affects her ligaments, organs, eyes, stomach, heart, skin and blood. She is very hypermobile and dislocates joints randomly. Putting on a jacket can dislocate an elbow, walking can dislocate an ankle. She is a very articulate young lady despite struggling with the everyday tasks required to attend school. Writing hurts and causes dislocated fingers as well as fatigue, she is in constant chronic pain. She is strong willed and determined to make a difference. Please email Maddy (maddy.parker@y7mail.com ) to let her know you have read her email and please pass it on to those you know. Lets help her get Ehlers Danlos Syndrome into the media! We are hoping that it gains enough community interest that people will do fundraisers and get some much needed funds to ConnecTeD for Kids foundation – a foundation that has research going on into connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and helps children with such disabilities. If this reaches anyone interested in fundraising please send the money to ConnecTeD foundation (details on their website) with a small note that it is due to Maddisons awareness efforts! She has had articles in the Herald sun and the Melton Leader so far, has had a radio interview and is nominated for the child of courage award 2012.

NSW has a connected tissue dysplasia clinic that is a multidisciplinary clinic for kids with connective tissue disorders. A one stop shop if you like, that is only accessible to those residing in NSW. This means those children in the rest of Australia do not have the same treatment options, we are forced to look for specialists in all different areas and as a result it is very hard to get a “team” together that is combined. Each one is a separate entity. It is not fair. We need to have a clinic in each state so that all Australain children with connective tissue disorders get the best treatment! This needs to be addressed by the government. Please help children like mine get much needed help.

Thanks for your time

Dear World,

My name is Maddison Parker, I am 9 years old and I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I am wanting the world to understand Ehlers Danlos Syndrome so am sending this email out. I have some questions for you all! I would like to know why no one cares about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? May was Ehlers Danlos Awareness Month and no-one really cared because I didnt hear anything about it anywhere! My grandma even sent a letter to A current Affair telling them it was the awareness month and again, nothing happened, they didnt even reply!!

A week in my life is full of pain. I'm constantly heating up my heat pack, and needing pain medicine. At school i cant finish my school work because Im in so much pain and all my joints dislocate. In case you dont know Ehlers Danlos syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that makes all my joints flexible, and pop out for no reason. It makes me very tired all the time, I cant play with all my friends because when I run around my joints pop out and it hurts and I get really tired. It doesnt just make my joints pop out but it effects my balance, my eyes, my heart, tummy, skin and even my blood. It is a really painful thing to have. It's not fair!

Im in and out of hospital and my wheelchair. I dislocate my joints every day and have pain all day every day. If I break a bone it takes me 3-4 months to heal when a normal person only takes about a month to heal! And my muscles disappear when the bones heal.

Im sick and tired of everyone saying there is nothing wrong with me because I look fine and that its all in my head. For lots of other disabilities you are trying to raise money to find a cure. But NO, not for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. As I said before, I am in and out of hospital, I know every corridor of the childrens hospital and the sunshine hospital. Even some of the doctors say "You again!" So I want to know WHY arent you trying to raise money to help cure my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome???? The doctors dont know much about it and cant really help me.

If I could change one thing about the world it would be the way people understand Ehlers Danlos Syndrome! I want to know WHY no-one cares and WHY no-one is trying to raise money to find a cure! WHY don't I matter??

From Maddison Parker

"Super Mum" Sue Kirkland....

Good Morning and HAPPY MONDAY! I hope the start of the week for you is bright and sunny and I also hope this finds you happy and healthy! As another week comes around, so does the opportunity for me to interview another "Super Mum" ..... this is something I have been doing weekly and sharing with you every Monday....these are "Super Mums" in many ways but as I have mentioned before, these are "every day" Mums just like US! I love speaking to these women and learning so much about them, I love that they make me smile, they warm my heart and they inspire me......I have had the honour this week of interviewing a very dear friend of mine. I have only known this Mum of 3 for a short time, however, you know instantly when meeting her that her heart is as true as they come.

“Sue Kirkland”

·         Tell us a little bit about you and your family?

“Super Mum” is not a title that I feel comfortable using to describe myself, I see myself more as an average person journeying through life while juggling the demands of being a working mum. I live with my hubby of 20 years and my 3 children (14, 11 and 9 yrs) and I work part time as an Occupational Therapist (OT) as well as teaching casually within the industry. As an OT, I assist people with their rehabilitation needs following an injury or disability and I enjoy assisting these people work through barriers to improve their independence, quality of life and achieve their goals.

No one has food allergies in our house, (although some have claimed to be allergic to green vegetables in the past!). We’ve always tried to eat a variety of fresh food made from the home kitchen, but have enjoyed trying new recipes from Cut out the Crap books despite not having to due to allergies.

·         What one ingredient can you not live without and why?

Is dark chocolate an ingredient? Good quality dark chocolate has to be the best treat.

·         If you had half an hour to cook dinner and realized you didn’t have anything planned, what would you cook?

If I had chicken breast, it would be a baked crumbed chicken with whatever vegetables were on hand. If nothing in the freezer, then I usually keep a tin of salmon in the pantry and I would cook salmon rissoles or a frittata.

·         What is once piece of advice you can pass on to other busy mums?
Each season in our lives brings different challenges and things to keep us busy. I had the 3 kids at home for 1 year when they were little and it felt super busy, but now that they are grown up some more, life can still be busy but with different challenges. As others have written before me, take the time out for yourself as well as with your family frequently to recharge and enjoy the season you’re in. It doesn’t need to be a whole day out all the time, it can be as easy as the cup of tea in the sunny corner, or exploring the different coloured shells on the beach together. I think it can be the modern day trap to have our own and our family’s week fully booked up with activities and things to do all the time. I must confess I need to take my own advice!
Sue enjoying a moment a cuppa in her "sunny corner"

·         If you could have dinner with any 3 people in the world, who would it be and why?
I’m not a big celebrity follower, so I would be more inclined to have 3 friends that I can laugh with and enjoy great conversation and great food.
But I would have someone to cook the meal for us, nothing too fancy but with great taste, maybe someone like Curtis Stone. I’m presently enjoying laughing at Hamish and Andy with my eldest as they are very silly; I think they would be fun to have for dinner. I would balance this out with someone inspirational in their Christian faith and life, such as Dr Catherine Hamlin would has worked for the obstetric health of women in Ethiopia.
·         The last few years you have been confronted with significant health challenges. Would you mind sharing your story with others?

In 2009 (the year I turned 40) I discovered a lump in my breast. Initially I was concerned but not terrified as I had no family history of cancer and I had a reasonably healthy diet and was exercising more than I had in several years – it would be OK. My husband had just finished 4 years of part time university study, while working full time and we had a short holiday already booked up the coast, so we went and enjoyed it. On my return I went to my GP and she thought it may be just a cyst but sent me off for the tests to be sure. After the scans and a biopsy, it was confirmed as breast cancer. Even at this stage I was still feeling pragmatic about it (OK, tell me what I need to do and let’s get rid of it). I had the lump removed soon after, but then received the results that it had spread into the lymph node which meant another lot of surgery and chemotherapy treatment. At this point I think the seriousness of it all hit home to me and the family and I moved past the denial stage. I have a strong Christian faith and believed that no matter what I was to face on this journey that God was there with me to provide me with the strength and support to get through it, but that’s not to say that there weren’t still plenty of tears and struggles.

So 2010 was spent having 6 months of chemotherapy followed by a course of radiation therapy. I felt unwell and tired a lot of the time but I had wonderful support from family, friends and others I didn’t really know so well and we made it through. As a parent you don’t want your kids to be anxious about your own health, so we tried to put the treatment into a positive light to the kids and aimed to keep their lives as normal as we could. They had to get used to my appearance being different and we talked through their own feelings and concerns as well. Sometimes awful things just happen, but with cancer an increasing disease it does make you question the effect of our modern day lifestyles and diet can have on our overall health.

I’m almost 3 years post diagnosis and I’m still adjusting to the changes my body has as a result of the treatment, but I’m still here and living well. I don’t find myself dwelling on the “What if it comes back” question, as I can’t fully control this and my life and my family’s lives are in God’s hands. Some people turn their lives around after cancer and take a whole new direction, but for me life has returned to the juggle of a working mum caring for the family, aiming to eat healthy, exercise regularly but taking the time to enjoy life’s big and small moments more and trying not to worry over the small stuff.
Relay for life walk. Sue and her team of Carers.

A "Super Mum" in my eyes that's for sure! I hope this touched your heart as it did mine....
Please don't forget to leave a comment, send me an email (info@cutoutthecrap.com.au) or pop by and say HI on Facebook (www.facebook.com/cutoutthecrap) and let Sue know just how amazing she is!

Wishing you a truly fantastic week....

ranting and raving....

Ok folks... prepare yourself because this blog is going to have me ranting, raving, venting and hopefully at no stage whilst writing this will my head be spinning in circles!

Last night I attended a "Healthy Habits" event at Singleton run by Danya and Peter Mullen and the wonderful Natalie from Mullen Health Hamilton (www.mullenhealth.com.au). It was an "event" in itself just for me to get there and oh my gosh I am thrilled that I did. I had the big girls being picked up from the bus stop after school, I drove the hour to my parents in the Hunter Valley with enough time to get there, put the port-a-cots up, have a cuppa and shower and get myself ready. Mum and Dad were looking after the twins for the night. I had to be at Singleton at 5pm and knew I wouldn't get away until 10ish so the plan was for the twins and myself to stay the night at my parents so I wasn't doing the almost 2 hour drive home late at night. Within 15 minutes of us turning up I had just set up the port-a-cots my Mum came in looking a shade of green and was horribly sick suddenly! Oh no! (good news here is it seems to have only been a tummy bug which is going around everywhere at the moment) I have never moved so fast, I packed everything up, threw the twins back in the car and drove away freaking out, unsure what I was going to do, not wanting to have to go home and miss the night that was ahead (and for all you mums out there you would know what a huge thing it is to pack for yourself and 2 toddlers on an overnight trip!)....after some tears and then deep breathing I finally got in touch with one of my best friends near Cessnock and literally dumped the twins on her, threw on decent clothes, makeup and good ol' hairspray some trusty heels and off I went....and phew I was only 20 minutes late! (I was there to sell books and meet some lovely people also!)

I drove away from the event around 10pm and my mind was going non stop......

....but first let me take a step back around 6 weeks.....

As most of you would know, I am the only person in our family with food allergies (mind you I think I have enough to cover everyone!) we eat brilliantly and this is something I am extremely proud of as a mum and wife. However, 6 weeks ago I made the CHOICE to change my household to be completely additive free....basically what I was needing to change was the kids packaged snacks eg muesli bars.....everything I was cooking was great but there was just that one shelf in the pantry that 'had to go' ..... so with the help of 2 books, The Chemical Maze and Additive Free Shopping Guide I cleaned it out, restocked and haven't looked back.....the reason for my decision on going completely Additive Free was my Miss 8 who was cranky, emotional and unbearable 90% of the day. I love her like any mother loves their child however I need to be honest and say I didn't enjoy being around her. She would argue with EVERYTHING and scream at me for the smallest thing and most mornings by 7.30am she was in tears screaming and crying over something which could be as little as her hair was knotty or I didn't do her shoe lace in a double knot.
Fact: In the last 6 weeks she has had 2 "meltdowns"....
Fact: In the last 6 weeks she has had 2 things with additives in them....
FACT: they have gone hand in hand.....

Miss 8 IS a different child....she is happy, tantrum free, others have noticed the difference, SHE has noticed the difference and she is a pleasure to be around.....this is all the proof I need that CUTTING OUT THE CRAP completely from our diet is one of the best decisions I could ever make as a parent.....

Miss 8 happy she can still have Additive Free treats!
I love this photo :-)
So back to last night.....last nights "talk" was inspirational in many ways. Naturopath Peter Mullen spoke on the importance of "healthy habits" as adults and we all got up close and personal with Iridology (which fascinates me). He asked us all to walk away with something which we were going to change for the better in regards to our health.....for me it was the decision to 'try' and get more sleep or at least STOP every now and then and rest up....before my body is screaming STOP at me!

From Left Peter Mullen, Mel (another Additive Free Mum), me, Tanya (Additive Free Pantry) and
Vanessa and Jenny from Thermomix

The second presenter on the night was Tanya from Additive Free Pantry (www.additivefreepantry.com) and she did what she does best and had me SHOCKED and HORRIFIED and let's not forget DISGUSTED with what goes into our food! If there was ever even the slightest doubt of my choices with additive free living there certainly isn't now! I wish this is something that every parent and carer and let's not forget schools could hear.....and not just listen to.....but TRULY hear!
Tanya was lovely enough to allow me to contact her today to get some of this information to share with you.....this is only the slightest touch on what she presents in her talks and if you ever have the opportunity of hearing her talk, you need to go!

Over 30% of Australian school aged children currently have asthma.

700 - 800 Australians currently die from asthma each year.

Australia has about 50,000 children taking stimulants for ADHD, which makes it (per capita) the third highest consumer in the world after the United States and Canada.

In 2009 an estimated 64,600 Australians had autism. This is an increase of 34,200 in 2003.

WTF....
“Healthy Canteens NSW” allow artificial sweetener aspartame in our children's school canteens, though honey is not permitted as it has a high sugar content...go figure!

Additives such as 621, 211 & 220 that are not recommended for children's consumption are found in abundance throughout school canteens Australia wide.

.....and now this....(also shared from Tanya) had me disgusted.....furious and wanting answers.....this is just one example of food being eaten daily by our kids and also being served in our canteens....

Chicken Crackles- 150d, 270, 319,508, 627, 631, 900, HVP, yeast extract & hydrogenated soy oil

150d may cause hypersensitivity and is linked to gastro intestinal problems.

270 is considered safe in foods as long as the are not consumed by infants as they may be unable to metabolise.

319 is toxic by ingestion, carcinogen, birth defects, nausea, vomiting, delirium, collapse & a dose of 5 grams is fatal.

508 is associated with gastric ulcers, nausea, circulatory collapse & liver toxicity. Not recommended for children.

627 is not safe for asthmatics & aspirin sensitive people also linked to hyperactivity & gout. Prohibited in foods for infants or young children.

631 should be avoided by people with asthma, gout or kidney disease. Not recommended for children or infants.

900 is linked to acute or delayed hypersensitivity reactions, ingestion of large amounts may cause nausea.

HVP & yeast extract are MSG.

Hydrogenated soy oil is manipulated by man, is likely to be genetically modified and can inhibit insulin receptors contributing to type 2 diabetes. Recent research indicates that hydrogenated fats are more likely to cause weight gain than any other fat.

How are you feeling after reading that??????

I have so many questions I just dont know where to start......How on earth does our Country get away with this? How do we allow and somehow find acceptable the fact that so much CRAP and poison is used in our food....Why are there harmful ingredients not allowed in other countries yet we are allowed them here? Why is there a 5% loophole on the ingredients list of packaged foods which manufacturers don't have to mention....it could be hidden preservatives that could make you horribly sick if your allergic to them and then you would never know what is causing it....Why is it acceptable that we feed these things to our children (and not to mention to ourselves) WHY are these things being sold in school canteens? How on earth are children meant to sit and behave and listen when their poor little innocent bodies are fighting on the inside with this poison that they are consuming.....are parents not aware of these harmful additives? How do we make parents more aware? Do parents want healthier options in their canteen? Do people not care? Is it all 'too daunting' or 'too hard' and WHY OH WHY is the excuse that we are 'too busy' used constantly...... Let me see......Hi, my name is ????, I love my children more than anything yet I also love money and socializing and therefore I dont have half an hour spare to cook my family a healthy meal for dinner so I will feed them POISON instead......

Ok, my head is starting to spin so I will calm down!

And last but not least WHY do Drs and other "health" professionals not look at these FACTS out there and suggest diet changes before drugs? DO NOT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY I am NOT in anyway saying that these behavioural issues in children are not real, however, my Miss 8s story is nothing compared to some I have heard lately...and their life has changed for the better after making 1 choice.....
